What is High Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force in the arteries when the heart beats and when the heart is at rest.
High blood pressure increases your risk for getting heart disease and/or kidney disease, and for having a stroke.
The first sound heard and registered on the gauge is called the systolic blood pressure.
It refers to the maximum pressure in the artery as the heart contracts to pump blood.
The last sound heard is the diastolic blood pressure.
It represents the lowest pressure that remains within the artery when the heart is at rest.
Some dieting tips:
• The amount of salt that we eat has a direct effect on our blood pressure.
• The more salt we eat, the higher our blood pressure.
• This is true, not only in people with high blood pressure, but also in people with normal blood pressure.
• Eat plenty of fruits and veggies: Bananas, dried fruits, melons, orange and tomato juice, baked potatoes with skins, plantain, avocados, squash, and pumpkin.
You should also endure some physical activity, manage your weight, and watch the consumption of alcohol per day.
With these general guidelines, and some prescribed medications, you should be able to maintain a lower BP level.
