What is a Stroke?
Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease. It affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts.
What Are the Types of Stroke:
1Clot (Ischemic) = Ischemic stroke accounts for about 83 percent of all cases.
Ischemic strokes occur as a result of an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain.
2Bleed (Hemorrhagic) = Hemorrhagic stroke accounts for about 17 percent of stroke cases. It results from a weakened vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain.
3TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) = Also called TIAs are minor or warning strokes. However, the obstruction occurs for a short time and tends to resolve itself through normal mechanisms. Even though the symptoms disappear after a short time, TIAs are strong indicators of a possible major stroke. Steps should be taken immediately to prevent a stroke.
Warning signs can include:
Sudden numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side
of the body extending one's hand or arm.
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking
or understanding speech
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden severe headache with no known cause
